Temporal Perception and Attention in Trained Musicians

چکیده

Considerable evidence converges on the plasticity of attention and possibility that it can be modulated through regular training. Music training, for instance, has been correlated with modulations early perceptual attentional processes. However, extent to which music training modulate mechanisms involved in processing information (i.e., perception attention) is still widely unknown, particularly between sensory modalities. If one modality lead concomitant enhancements different modalities, then this could taken as a supramodal system. Additionally, if trained musicians exhibit improved skills outside domain music, notion far-transfer, where improvements another. To investigate further, we evaluated effects using tasks designed measure simultaneity temporal acuity, how these are influenced by auditory, visual, audio-visual conditions. Trained showed significant visual modality, well generally although not all Visual cues directing discrimination accuracy auditory discrimination, suggesting have selective arguably due increased efficiency when compared nonmusicians. Implications theory future studies discussed.

Exploring Visual Attention in Musicians: Temporal, Spatial and Capacity Considerations

Considerable evidence converges on how attention can be modulated through training (e.g., video game playing). While previous research suggests that musical training can modulate early perceptual and attentional processes, no single investigation to date has been conducted on the same participants to measure specific mechanisms of attention (temporal, spatial, and capacity) in musicians. In Exp...

Directed attention and perception of temporal order.

The present research examined the effects of directed attention on speed of information transmission in the visual system. Ss judged the temporal order of 2 stimuli while directing attention toward 1 of the stimuli or away from both stimuli. Perception of temporal order was influenced by directed attention: Given equal onset times, the attended stimulus appeared to occur before the unattended s...

Lexical tone perception in musicians and non-musicians

It has been suggested that music and speech maintain entirely dissociable mental processing systems. The current study, however, provides evidence that there is an overlap in the processing of certain shared aspects of the two. This study focuses on fundamental frequency (pitch), which is an essential component of melodic units in music and lexical and/or intonational units in speech. We hypoth...

Temporal Information Processing in Musicians and Nonmusicians

THE PRESENT STUDY WAS DESIGNED to examine the general notion that temporal information processing is more accurate in musicians than in nonmusicians. For this purpose, 36 academically trained musicians and 36 nonmusicians performed seven different auditory temporal tasks. Superior temporal acuity for musicians compared to nonmusicians was shown for auditory fusion, rhythm perception, and three ...

Multimodal Temporal Perception in Musicians: Evidence for Both Segregated and Supramodal Attentional Systems?

Although musical training has been correlated with modulations of early perceptual and attentional processes, the majority of investigations neglect the possibility of cross modality enhancements. We investigated the effects of musical training by measuring spatial and temporal attention in a temporal order judgment task in auditory, visual, and crossmodal conditions with and without non-predic...
